Chapter 5- Making things worse
In a room with two beds in a certain cheap hotel, luggage was scattered all over the floor but it was ignored by the room’s inhabitants.
Nydia was lying face down in the bed. She was tired from the bus ride and felt like she just lost a few years of her life from the taxi ride. She looked at the girl who was sitting on the chair. Her reaction when she saw the room was “You call this a room? Even our servants’ room is bigger than this.” This prompted Ayna to throw some of the luggage across the room in annoyance.
“Ayna-nee I wish you would stop your habit of throwing, kicking, breaking, tearing, bashing, spilling, burning, crashing, smashing, and swearing when you are mad. See? You scared the poor girl.” were words that will never be uttered in the real world.
The girl hid behind Nydia’s back the whole time. She only separated herself when Ayna went to the bathroom to take a shower. Nydia was finally able to relax. She just wanted to lie down in bed until the food arrived.
“Hey! You!” The girl’s voice called out. “How long are you going to ignore me? Hey!”
Nydia let out a groan. She still wanted to rest before Ralia arrives. Instead she raised her tired body and sat at edge of the bed in front of the girl.
“So… I guess we still don’t know each other.” Nydia began with an awkward laughed. “I’m Nydia. Aib Nydia S. Iamon.”
“That’s a strange name.” The girl raised her head up and replied arrogantly. “You may call me Anastasia.”
“Uhmmm… Your last name?”
“A commoner has no need to know. You might decide to kidnap me if you find out what kind of family I come from.” The little girl replied haughtily.
Ignoring the girl’s reaction Nydia continued talking in a kind voice. “Then can you tell me why you were hiding earlier. And who were those men?”
Anastasia fell silent. Nydia patiently waited for her to continue speaking. She thought she was a run away at first but her fear didn’t seem normal.
The small girl lowered her head, her delicate shoulders trembling. She tightened her small fist that was on top of her skirt.
“Daddy-daddy died 3 days ago. Now, Uncle Harold wants me dead because I’m inheriting all of daddy’s money.”
Nydia was silent for a long while. She stared blankly at Anastasia in front her whose eyes began to water.
Whattttt theeeee fudgeeeeee? Where did this come from? Why the drama all of a sudden? How did this happen?
“I need to go to the Sigod city. Daddy’s lawyer is on a conference there and I need to go to meet him and ask him what I should do.” Anastasia continued as she wiped her tears with the back of her hand. Nydia offered her a handkerchief which the young girl took.
Nydia was at a loss on what to do. Since they met, this little girl was precocious, arrogant and demanding but it can also be said she was true to herself. Nydia believed that she was not lying. However, this child looked only seven at most and was a spoiled brat from a rich family. She is bound to encounter mishaps on her journey. Wasn’t her encounter with them the best example?
“Then… Uhmmm… I’m sorry about your father. I guess it was our fault you didn’t get to ride the bus. Sorry.”
“Hmmmph! That’s right! Because of you I also almost got caught!” Anastasia replied in her usual haughty self. Nydia inwardly sighed in relief. She would rather deal with a stuck-up rather than someone who was on the verge of crying.
“How about you try riding the bus again?” Nydia continued then stop herself. “Ah! But your uncle’s men might still be there. What about the airport?”
Anastasia shook her head. “I already went there. When I bought the ticket, a few minutes later Uncle Harold’s men arrive. I don’t know what to do anymore.”
“The train! How about riding the train?”
“The same situation.” Anastasia replied despondently. Seeing the hopeless situation Nydia sighed.
It was then the door from the bathroom opened and a freshly showered Ayna came out. Her mood improved after washing the dirt and sweat from the journey. She planned to eat first before going out to meet her friends. She noticed the two gloomy people but proceeded to ignore them as she occupied the other bed and opened her laptop.
“Ayna-nee,” Nydia warily asked. “What would you do if you were being hunted and you can’t travel by bus, train or plane to run away?”
Without removing her attention from the monitor Ayna replied flatly, “Accept… defeat… Beg for a… quick death……. hungry”
“Ayna-nee! Please don’t make the situation worse!” Nydia scolded in her heart. Of course she wouldn’t say it out loud.
Nydia glanced at Anastasia. Her face was pale and her body seemed smaller.
“D-don’t worry Anastasia.” Nydia stuttered beginning to panic. “I’m sure we can’t think of a solution because we’re hungry. B-besides I’m sure Ralia-neesan will have an idea what to do.”
Hearing Ralia’s name Anastasia’s hand suddenly shot out and grabbed Nydia’s collar.
“Eh? W-what’s wro-”
“I don’t need that crazy woman’s help!” Anastasia hissed between her teeth, fear and anger evident in her eyes. Her voice was low, making sure only Nydia can hear. In her mind only Nydia was normal of the three sisters. Hence, she didn’t want the other sister in the room to hear what she was saying.
Taking a hint, Nydia replied in a whisper while her hands unclamp Anastasia’s hand from her clothes. “Don’t worry! Even if they have troublesome personalities my sisters are really reliable you know.”
Anastasia took a peak at Ayna who was currently staring at the ceiling murmuring “hungry… hungry…” nonstop while typing on the laptop every now and then. She raised a single eyebrow at Nydia.
“It’s only because we haven’t had lunch yet!” Nydia immediately defended her sister. “Ayna-nee is really picky with food so Ralia-neesan always has to look for meals that Ayna-nee can eat. She doesn’t like vegetables, spicy food or those with biter and savory taste. If she doesn’t like the food she forces me to eat it in her place even if I don’t want to or even if I’m already full!”
“Is she a kid or something?” said the little girl. “Besides is it okay to treat you like some-kind of ‘disposing’ bin. Isn’t that the reason why you have so much useless fat?”
“It’s not like that.” Not noticing Anastasia’s line of sight, Nydia continued on. “Ralia-neesan just hates wasting money since we have limited budget. We still have to visit every city in the country. That’s why we stay at cheap hotels, ride the cheapest transportation and even walk if we have to.”
“All of the cities?” Anastasia asked, her eyes growing wide.
Nydia nodded solemnly. “Yes, all 144 of them.”
“Why? If you don’t have enough money why would you do that? Commoners should just stay in one place since you’re poor.”
“Well… It’s not that we’re poor.” Nydia replied sheepishly. “It’s just a situation in our family. We can’t say no.”
“I guess even commoners have their own set of problems too.” Anastasia said with a nod of her head. “Hearing you trying to do something way beyond your financial capacity, I can’t help but feel respect for you commoners.”
“No, we’re not really-” Nydia heave a sighed. “Never mind, Ralia-neesan will arrive later with the food. I’m sure she will have a solution to your problems. She always does.”
“No! I’m not asking for help from that woman! I don’t even know why you believe in her too much. Since I met you people, your sisters were nothing but mean!”
Nydia scratched her head helplessly. She always thought of herself as someone who was tolerant and agreeable. But right about now, she was starting to lose her patience.
That was because you weren’t exactly acting like a sweet naïve child. Even my sisters didn’t like me when I was younger, you know. But I need to be more understanding. She’s sad and lonely since her father died. A lot of bad people are also after her. I know! Maybe if she learns some things about Ralia-neesan and Ayna-nee, she might change her mind about them. Or at least improve a little her opinion a little.
“Well… my sisters are not that bad.” Nydia said as she cross her arms in deep thought. “Ayna-nee is just a little lazy and immature. She absolutely hate troublesome things including showing emotions and talking! But her online persona is really active and friendly. I think she sees other people as carrots or something, not worthy of her time and effort.”
“W-what? That has nothing to do with being lazy! That’s a mental sickness, isn’t it?” Anastasia harshly whispered.
“Not to mention she really gets scary when she gets mad. Even our mama doesn’t know when she will lose her temper. We had to change the window in her room a number of times since she keeps breaking it. This is also the first time in a few years since she left her room.”
“Mental hospital! Why isn’t she in a mental hospital? Bring her to a doctor already!”
“As for Ralia-neesan,” Nydia continued in a low voice. “Well… True, Ralia-neesan is really selfish, demanding and sadistic. She’s the type to laugh when someone trips and presses the close button in the elevator when someone tries to get on. She’s impatient and quick to lose her temper.”
“Oi! Oi! Those are all negative. Are you sure you don’t hate this sister of yours?”
“If I make a mistake, she punishes me heavily. She makes me count the rice grains in a sack or tie me upside down on a tree while dogs that weren’t fed for three days bark below me. In my heart I call her my evil-neesan. She also keeps grudges and makes sure she retaliates even if a few years have already passed.”
“Still no good qualities? Or more like this sister is scary! Why hasn’t anybody reported her to the police yet?”
“But-but you know. Ayna-nee even if she’s really violent she will never intentionally hurt anyone. Whenever I get sick, she will order medicine and my favorite food to be delivered at home. As for Ralia-neesan, she may be strict but she will never let other people bully me. She will always be the first to defend me even if it’s against our mama and relatives.” Nydia finished in a voice full of pride.
Anastasia stared at her before nodding her head slowly. “I see. I get it!”
“Oh! You finally understand that my sisters are technically good people even if they have extreme personalities?” Nydia asked hopefully.
“No, I understand that you have been brainwashed by your sisters! I thought you were normal but that too much to ask considering your family.”
“What are talking about?”
Anastasia raised her hand and pointed to Nydia.
“You are a masochist and someone who has a huge sister complex!” She shouted.
“Eh?” Nydia looked at Anastasia surprised at what she said. She blinked a few times before she turned to looked at Ayna. Her older sister with her unemotional face, who only heard the shouted one sentence to understand what they were talking about, nodded her head in confirmation.
